About RatesReliefCheck

A free, independent business rates relief checker for UK businesses.

What is RatesReliefCheck?

RatesReliefCheck is a free online tool that helps UK businesses instantly discover which business rates reliefs they qualify for and exactly how much they could save. We cover all major England relief schemes for 2024/25: Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR), the Retail Hospitality & Leisure (RHL) discount, rural rate relief, mandatory charitable relief, and empty property relief.

Estimates suggest that hundreds of millions of pounds in unclaimed Small Business Rate Relief sits uncollected each year. Many small business owners are unaware they qualify — particularly those who have never applied, moved premises without reapplying, or who occupy properties just above the automatic exemption threshold.

How accurate are the calculations?

Our checker uses the official 2024/25 England multipliers (49.9p small business, 54.6p standard) and the current SBRR thresholds (100% at or below £12,000, tapered between £12,001–£15,000). The RHL discount is modelled at 75% capped at £110,000 per business, as set by the government for 2024/25. Rural and charitable relief rules are based on current legislation.

All calculations are estimates. Your actual bill depends on your local council's application of these reliefs, any transitional arrangements, and whether additional discretionary reliefs apply. Always confirm your entitlement with your local billing authority.

What does this tool not cover?

Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland — all three nations have different rating systems. This tool covers England only. Discretionary reliefs — local councils can grant discretionary top-up relief for charities and hardship relief for businesses in financial difficulty. These are not modelled here. Transitional relief — phased increases and decreases in bills following revaluations are not included.

Is this professional rating advice?

No. RatesReliefCheck is an estimation and information tool. Nothing on this site constitutes professional rating advice.
